What’s a Pergola?

While passing through residential areas, have you noticed beautiful wooden structures covered in vines? They are called pergolas. Typically confused for gazebos and arbors, pergolas are easy to install, require little to no maintenance, provide partial shade, and add pizazz to your backyard.

Freestanding or home-attached pergolas?

Attached pergolas serve as an extension of your home, a transition between indoors and outside. The outdoor room provides airy space that isn’t confined. Attached pergolas create unique spaces like:

  • Pergola over patio doors
  • Deck pergola
  • Garage pergola
  • Pergola entryway and
  • Pergola pool-house to name a few.

Free-standing pergolas pull garden shape and style together. Good for any foundation like cement or mounted on a deck, free-standing pergolas also provide partial shade for your garden. Hang planters, or plants like wisteria, clematis or grape vines on the pillars. The most common type of pergola is the freestanding wooden pergola, though they come in a wide variety of materials like:

  • Fiberglass
  • Aluminum
  • Cedar
  • vinyl

For simple designs, pergola kits are the way to go: they involve less construction time. However, for custom and complicated designs, like adding a stone fireplace, you may need help from a professional.

Pergola Cost

The cost of pergolas varies based on design, material, square footage and the labor for custom work. Even if you want a tiny pergola, the total area it covers will dictate how much you spend, not the size. If you’re looking for beauty on a budget, wood pergolas with open roofs are strongly suggested.

A stone pathway and fireplace or multicolored mulch can accent your pergola. But whatever you decide, we’re ready to turn your landscaping ideas into reality.
